MELLAH HABIT

South Londoner Mellah (Liam Ramsden) has just dropped a new single 'Habit', along with a video that touches on self-destructive behaviour in a light-hearted way. The video sees multiple manifestations of Liam torment himself with hammers, mouse traps and scissors, whist Liam walks around his flat trying to escape 'himself'. The first thing about the song that hits is Mellah's off-kilter sense of groove that just makes you want to move. With off-beat phrasing, Liam's words are squeezed into small spaces, then allowed room to expand in - a unique style of his, and part of what makes him a fantastic songwriter. The chorus sees guitars slide with chorus pedals vibrating through it, whilst drums and bass remain percussive, with counter-rhythms from the vocals "habit that keeps you out, habit that keeps you in, there'll be no change without change within...the same old shit drifts in new skin." 'Habit' is an enlightened song that talks about cycle of destructive behaviour and the need for change. -Ellie Rose-Davies
